‘Within infinite myths lies an eternal truth

Who sees it all?

Varuna has but a thousand eyes

Indra, a hundred

You and I, Only two.’

-Devdutt Pattanaik

A beautiful book by Devdutt Pattnaik- the master of mythology. The book is well written and is amazing. Devdutt Pattanaik has written a super simplified and very entertaining version of the Great Book ‘Ramayana’.

Ramayana is not only a holy book of Hindus but has proved to be a guide on this complex path of life. Ramayan is the most told story in not only India but in the whole world. Every person has his own version of Ramayana, including his own little detail. This addition of little details has led to the formation of thousand various versions of Ramayan. The oldest existing and the most-believed version is the Ramayan written by Maharshi Valmiki. But the fact is that it does not include many details which are well-believed today to be an integral part of Ramayan. For example, we can take the absence of the fact of ‘Laxman Rekha’ in Valmiki Ramayana. In my opinion, each version has its own importance. Every version tells us something very useful and teaches us something to successfully pass this complex path of life. There is also a variation in the belief of Ramayana on the basis of Regions. like Kamban Ramayan is famous in South.

So now the question is,

‘Which Ramayana to believe?’

Devdutt Pattanaik has come with a nice solution to this question. He has blended useful parts from more than 20 Ramayanas to produce a single book which has the best parts for every single incident believed to occur in Ramayana.

The book starts with the birth of the 4 brothers and ends at an end which many have never heard before. The book reveals many secrets about the characters as well as the incidents which took place in the Ramayana. The illustrations are beautiful and a nice guide while reading the story. The story is short as compared to the Valmiki Ramayana. But it is highly useful and knowledgeable. It is written in simple language which can be understood by all. It has the story of Luv and Kush also with detailed explanation.

The best part of this book is that it contains notes after every chapter containing facts, detail of the occurrences of various incidents in various versions of Ramayana, character details, historical details and many more things.

The additional bonus is that you will find arguments about the doings of various characters of the Ramayana in various chapters. It explores the reason behind the doing of these characters or incidents.

Overall it is a must read book and the best version, if you want to read the Ramayana.
